Mouthguards

Keep your smile safe.

A mouthguard is a soft plastic material that is used to protect and prevent oral injuries. The American Dental Association anticipates that one-third of all dental injuries are sports-related. Child or adult, a mouthguard is essential for all athletes.

Saline Orthodontics also partners with SISU, mouthguards locally designed in Saline. These are wonderful mouthguards to use, especially for people with braces. We also host Free Mouthguard Clinics for anyone to attend!

What types of mouthguards are available?

There are three main types.

Stock mouthguards come ready to wear and can be found at most sporting goods and stores.

Boil and bite mouth protectors, are placed in hot water to soften, and placed in the mouth to be shaped around the teeth. These can also be found in many sporting good stores.

Custom-fitting mouth protectors are designed for the individual and are made in a dental office.

How to care for a mouthguard?

  • Rinse your mouthguard with water or mouth rinse before and after each use.

  • Clean the mouthguard in cool water and rinse thoroughly. This can be done with a toothbrush.

  • For transportation, place the mouthguard in a firm, perforated container. This helps air circulate and prevent damage.

  • Protect the guard from sitting in high temperatures as this may cause distortion of the material and shape.

  • Bring the mouthguard to dentist visits regularly to verify the fit.
